For my wonder topic today, I am wondering about Redwood Trees. How tall is the tallest one? What is the width of one? How many are there? 

How tall is the tallest Redwood Tree?

Redwood Trees easily reach the height of 91 metres. But, the tallest of them all, the one that dwarfs the others, is a Redwood Tree named Hyperion. It was discovered in 2006 and is 115.7 metres tall! What a giant.

How old can Redwood Trees get to?

These humongous giants can live to be more than 2,000 years old! They have been on this earth for 240 million years. Jeez, how old is the oldest tree still standing? Well, I'm not exactly sure how old the oldest Redwood tree is, but Bristlecone trees are known to live a lot longer than Redwoods. The oldest one is approximately 5,000 years old! Wow, what a wise old tree.

What is the diameter of a Redwood Tree?

Some amazing individuals can sometimes reach to be 360 feet tall (109.7 metres) and 20 feet in diameter (6 metres).

I find these giant trees to be interesting. Imagine standing next to one of these beasts! They would tower over you.

Home Economics

On Friday last week, we made scones. We were late to class because we didn't hear the bell for period four, so we started cooking a little later. Because of this, we couldn't wait to get our scones out of the oven because the bell for lunch had already rung. So, we took them out before they were cooked properly and they were really doughy. 

Other than that, it was really fun working with my teammate. We got eight scones each.

Below is a word art I made for food and a thermometer I made a couple of weeks ago:

Now I'm going to write the recipe we needed to make our scones:

Ingredients

3 cups of plain flour

6 teaspoons of Baking Powder

¼ teaspoon of salt

75g of butter

1 to 1 ½ cups of milk

                                                        

Method

1. Sift flour, baking soda, and salt into a bowl
2. Cut butter until it resembles fine breadcrumbs
3. Add milk and mix quickly with a knife to a soft dough
4. Knead a few times
5. Place baking paper on a tray
6. Press scone dough onto this and cut up into pieces for each of you
7. Brush milk 
8. Bake at 180° for 10 mins

1. Cheese Scones

Add ¾ cup grated cheese, a pinch of cayenne pepper to flour.

This prohibitive sign that I made above is explaining that you should not talk when the teacher's back is turned. Be respectful and keep quiet while they teach. It shows the teacher working on the whiteboard while two students have their own little conversation instead of listening.

What is a hazard?

• A hazard is something that can cause you harm. 
• It's something that could put you in danger.
• It's something that could fall on you, crush you, or harm you in some way.
• If water is spilled across the floor, it's a slipping hazard.

What is a mandatory sign?

• Mandatory is something that you NEED to do.
• If it is a graphic with a person wearing a helmet, it means you should wear a helmet around that specific area.
• If it's a boot, it means you should be wearing the appropriate footwear.

What is a prohibitive sign?

• Prohibitive is something that you should NOT do.
• If it is a graphic of a cigarette, it is prohibiting you from smoking. 
• If it is a burger, you should not eat.
• It is a black graphic that is surrounded by a red circle with a cross through it.

What is a hazard sign?

A hazard is a danger or risk that could possibly injure someone. It looks like a yellow triangle with the hazard in a black, bold figure. Possibly an exclamation mark. Below is an image of some hazard signs.

What is a prohibitive sign?
A prohibitive sign is something that you should not do. It is an image with a big red circle crossed through it. It could be a bike, as in do not ride your bike in this area, or a cigarette as in do not smoke. It is something that you don't do. Below is an image of some prohibitive signs.

What is a mandatory sign?

A mandatory sign is something that you should do. It is an image with a blue background and a white figure. It could be a boot, meaning you should wear the appropriate footwear. Or a person wearing a hat, meaning you should wear a helmet to protect your head. Below is an image of some mandatory signs.

The Mariana Trench - Curiosity Topic - English

The Mariana Trench 

Because it's the end of term and it's the last day, I'm uploading a curiosity topic today (Tuesday) because we're not going to school on Friday. This week's curiosity topic is on the Mariana Trench. Yes, the deep, dark trench carved in the bottom of the ocean populated by creepy monster fish.

What is the size of the trench?

The Mariana Trench is more than 2,550 kilometres long, 69 kilometres wide and 10,994 metres deep. The deepest part in the Mariana Trench is called the Challenger Deep.   

What creatures have been found at the bottom of the Mariana Trench?

The creatures below are some of the most confusing creatures found at the depths of the Mariana Trench;

• The Ghostfish; a Ghost-fish spotted at 8,200 feet underwater is the first time a member of the Aphyonidae family has been found alive.

• The Barreleye Fish or Spookfish; The Barreleye fish is an unusual creature with a transparent head. It is related to the Opisthoproctidae family who is found in tropical-to-temperate waters of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans.

• The Dumbo Octopus; Unlike other octopodes, the Dumbo Octopus does not have an ink sack. Because of the Grimpoteuthis' (The Dumbo Octopus) figure, it gets its name because of the resemblance to Disney's character Dumbo the elephant.

• The Goblin or Vampire Shark; The Goblin Shark is a rare species of the deep-sea shark, sometimes it goes by the name 'living fossil'. It is the only extant representative member of the Mitsukurinadae family, a family that is 125 million years old.

• Giant Toxic Amoebas; The creatures were discovered at the depths of 6.6 miles (10.6 kilometres). That breaks the previous record for xenophyophores found in the New Hebrides Trench at 4.7 miles (7.6 kilometres). They are about 10 centimetres long, they're one of the largest single-celled animals to exist.

Has anyone ever made it to the bottom?

As a matter of fact, there has. James Cameron recently fulfilled his longtime goal and reached the bottom of the trench in a manned craft. It took about 90 minutes to touch the ground floor.

How cold is it in the trench?
It is (34-39 degrees Fahrenheit)1-4 degrees Celsius in the Mariana Trench.

Why is it called the Mariana Trench?
It is named the Mariana Trench because it is closest to the Mariana Islands.

The Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench (a.k.a Mariana's Trench) is actually the deepest point on earth. It is said they used to drop nuclear waste in the Mariana Trench. But really, when a plate is covered in oceanic crust and is then subducted below another plate covered in oceanic crust it forms a trench, such as the Mariana Trench.
