Orana Wildlife Park - Reflection

It was a bumpy ride to Orana Wildlife Park, we were on the bus, and everyone was loud. Chantae, Kyra-Lee and Lily-Ray were playing with cards. They played ‘Snap’ and ‘The Last Card’. I sat behind them and watched. We were on the bus for about 20 minutes. When we finally arrived we waited for the rest of the buses to show up. We scattered around and talked in small groups. When all of the teachers were there, we lined up in our assigned groups. Whaea Mel was my teacher. We all walked over to a gate and the tour guides talked about ‘how we need to stick together’ and ‘it’s dangerous so we need to be careful’ and other things like that. They opened the gate and we walked to the cafe. We ate a few things for morning tea and then put our bags in a room. We waddled over to the next room and sat on some bleachers. One of the tour guides explained what we were going to do that day, and that he doesn’t want to talk long.

He called our groups and we went with a tour guide. My group was 4E and we were with Paula and Whaea Mel. First we went to see the birds. We saw Tui, Kakariki, and the cheeky Kea. The Kea were in a separate cage though. We had to be careful because the deck was wet and slippery, and if we weren’t we’d slip. Luckily no one did. Next we went to see the Kiwi. Paula explained how we needed to be quiet and not take pictures with the flash on. We walked in a dark room and spotted one. There was supposed to be two but we only saw one. After that we went into a room and Paula showed us some stuffed animals. There was a Kiwi, a Stoat, a Rat and a few more predators of the Kiwi. After we saw the reptiles. There was a Tuatara but we couldn’t see him. We did see some smaller relatives of the Tuatara and some frogs.

Next we saw the Lions. We walked across a landing and saw them lying underneath a tree. There were males and females but the males hadn’t grown their manes yet. After we saw them we went over to the Tigers. There were two of them and they were brothers. Next we walked out and saw a bit of a show. I think they were gibbons. Some people were feeding them and a lady was talking into a microphone. After that we sat and ate lunch. I had a sandwich and an apple. We grabbed our bags and started walking again. After that we went to see the giraffes. They were up near where we were until someone scared them away so we didn’t get to feed them. When we came down we saw rhinos. They were on the other side of a pond and I thought we were looking at ducks (haha). After we went to see the cheetahs. They were in a small inclosure and I thought it should be bigger so they can run around. Next we went to see the gorillas. There was three of them and two of them were up on top of a post. The other one was on the ground. Suddenly Chimera spotted that there was one gorilla pooping and another one was peeing… Eww. After we finished looking at them we went back to the carpark and hopped on the buses. When everyone was on a bus, they all drove off. My feet were sore from all of the walking that day, but it was really fun. I’m glad we could experience this.

We often share personal information when we are online. The people we share with could be our friends and family or people we don't know. We need to make smart decisions about what personal information we share online.

Hot & Cold

This is Me and Kyra's Experiment - Hot & Cold

For this experiment you need blue and rose pink or red food dye, a plastic card which you can cut out of the bottom of a plastic bowl, a jar of hot water and a jar of cold water, a skewer and a dish or bowl to catch any mess you make.

First you fill up the jars, one hot and the other cold.. You dip the skewer in the food colouring three times in each colour, and then into the water. The rose pink or red food dye will go in the hot water and the blue food dye into the cold water. After that you put the jar with the hot water on/in the dish and put the plastic card on top of the jar with cold water. Make sure that the rim of the jar is clear through the plastic. After that quickly, but carefully, flip it over and sit it on top of the jar with hot water. Then slowly, and again, carefully slide the plastic out from between the two jars. Now the colours should be mixing into a purplish indigo.

That was the first way. Now refill the jars with clean water, one hot and one cold. Put the food dye in. But this time put the jar of cold water in the dish, and put the plastic card on the jar of hot water. After that flip the jar of hot water, and put it on the jar of cold water. Slowly and carefully slip the the plastic out, now it shouldn't have mixed. The hot water shouldn't have gone through and the cold water should've stayed where it is.

 

This experiment involves Air Resistance because the steam from the hot water is like air. Also Geothermal Energy because of the hot water. And last, but not least, Balanced Forces because the hot and cold water are leveled. The atua (god) would be Ruaumoko, he is a maori god that was never born from Papatuanuku (earth). So he is still underground and causing all of the earthquakes and volcanoes because he is angry and his siblings for turning Papatuanuku over.

When the hot water is on top of the cold water it doesn't mix. We think that it's because of the steam from the hot water is acting like a barrier so it doesn't go through.

When the cold water is on top of the hot water it mixes because there isn't any steam barrier to stop it from falling through.
