Neutralisation - Science - pH Levels

Aim: To observe a neutralisation reaction.

Equipment: A test tube, test tube rack, 1 mol L-1 Na2Co3 (sodium carbonate), 1 mol L-1 HCI (hydrochloric acid), dropper or dropper bottle, Universal indicator solution.

Method: Add approximately 1-2 mL of Na2CO3 and place the test tube into the test tube rack. Add 3-5 drops of Universal indicator solution. Using a dropper bottle, add HCI drop by drop. Be careful because adding even a small amount of extra acid can mean you'll miss the neutralisation point.

Results:

Discussion: The Universal Indicator mixed with the hydrochloric acid and sodium carbonate to create a different colour based on the pH levels from red (acid) to violet (base).

Conclusion: We created and observed neutralisation. We also made them react in the form of a rainbow (ROYGBIV). Red being most acidic and violet being the most basic.

Making Indicators - Science Term 2 - 2019

Making Indicators

Aim: To make acid-base indicators using everyday substances.

Equipment: Red cabbage, a beaker, water, tripod, Bunsen burner, gauze mat, 1.0 mol L-1 NaOH.

Method: Chop the cabbage into small pieces until you have enough to fill 2 cups. Place the cabbage in a large beaker and add water to cover the cabbage. Boil over a Bunsen burner for at least ten minutes for the colour to leach out of the cabbage. Filter out the plant material to obtain a red-purple-bluish coloured liquid. This liquid is at about pH 7. (The exact colour you get depends on the pH of the water.) Place in a small beaker and leave to one side.

Discussion: My group experimented on red cabbage. The acid made the indicator red. And the base made the indicator green. The acid and base mix with the indicator and it forms a different colour, warning you whether it is acidic or neutral/basic.

Conclusion: We successfully made acid-base indicators by mixing acids and bases in with the indicator.

Individual SEXXY Paragraph - English - The Power Of One

I created a SEXXY Paragraph about The Power Of One with Nia, and now I've done one on my own (below) based on the scene of Geel Piet and Sergeant Bormann.

In this scene, we see Sargeant Bormann holding Geel Piet against the wall by the neck with his baton. Sargeant Bormann had been suspicious of Geel Piet for a while and that night was the night he made a move. The director used a close-up shot to show how intense and important the scene was. He used a close-up shot, very cleverly may I add, for the sole purpose to keep the audience on their seats- to wonder what will happen to poor Geel Piet next. It made us feel sad and frustrated at the fact Geel Piet was being beaten up just because Sergeant Bormann wanted information about what the prisoners were really singing about. This shot can be juxtaposed to the scene where Geel Piet and young PK are introducing themselves to each other.

Power Of One - SEXXY Paragraph - English

For the past few weeks in English, we've been learning how to write SEXXY paragraphs. S-statement, E-example, X-explain the director's purpose, X-explain the effect, Y- your link. Nia and I created one, and here (below) I've posted it.

In this prison scene, the director uses this long shot effectively to capture the nature of the scene which is fear. We see the guard (Sergeant Bormann) holding his baton, PK, Geel Piet, Doc, and some prisoners. The aspect of this long shot has an effect of suspicion and possible violence in the next scene. This long shot of the prison can be juxtaposed to the scene showing Maria's father's house. The difference between the slums and the mansion is very drastic.
